Another Quick Tip
If overloading a truck or car always latch everything down to prevent things from flying out. Forgot to do that today and a couple chairs kind of fell out of the back onto the road. One almost hit another car coming the opposite direction. Oops!!!
Some Quick Tips
Moving can be a pain. Here are a couple quick tips that a friend told me that has been helpful.
1. Color and Label
This makes it so much easier to tell where things go when putting it into the new house. You don’t end up putting the kitchenware in the bedroom by accident and then have to dig through several boxes to before finding and then dragging them into the kitchen. That can be quite annoying.
2. Pack Ahead of Time
I’ve been slowly moving stuff from my current home to the new place as I have time. I’d have never been able to have such a leisurely moving experience if I didn’t simply pack stuff ahead of time. This is particularly true for less vital things that you don’t use everyday, like out of season clothes or the spare television. Of course have overlapping rental times also helps.
3. Know Someone with a Pickup
God a little pickup truck is a must for moving. Things like the bed, television, tables and chairs are tough to fit into a car without taking multiple extra trips or any trip at all if these items don’t fit in your rig. If you don’t know someone with a pickup I’d suggest you meet one soon. Maybe you can find someone on Myspace or Plenty of Fish or something, hehe.
Certain Companies Suck
So I canceled a moving order with a company just a couple days ago. They’ve proceeded to contact to let me know that I’m still going to be charged for extra supplies, (boxes, tapes, etc.), unless I send them back. Of course, I never received these items in the first place and on top of that I canceled the order before anything should have been shipped. They’re trying to charge me for sending me items they shouldn’t have sent in the first place.
Now I have to go through the credit card company to full cancel the order. In addition, I’m fighting the company on the supplies issue. I’m sure most people just roll over and pay the extra few dollars, but I’m not one of those kinds of people.
Moving Companies Can Suck
Ok, so I think I may go without a moving company of any sort and just beg my friends to help. I have to jump through to many hoops to get what I want from these companies and looking at the equipment these people own is just terrible. Of course, the fine print has it set up that if anything breaks on my watch it comes out of my pocket, how convenient.
Also, I’m not a fan of these companies over charging for supplies and moving accessories. You can get boxes for free pretty much anywhere and they’re charging five to ten bucks a pop for them. Brand name boxes, got to love capitalism. And of course, you know people buy them regardless. Idiots!
I’m Moving
Ok, so I’m finally getting out of the old ratty home I’ve been living in for the last few years. It’s a rental so I’m ultimately not going to miss it very much at all. One thing I didn’t realize about moving though is just how difficult it can be to plan and get everything ready to move. Moving to a new home can be a daunting challenge. When I moved into the place I’m living now, I didn’t own much of anything so it wasn’t a big deal; now, I have to carefully pack things and make sure everything here makes it to my new place.
Another thing is the expense of moving out. I’ve been looking at the costs of several companies, including the possibility of U-Haul and moving pods prices, and notice it can cost an arm and a leg to move my crap out of here. I could rent a U-Haul or do the most cost effective thing and move myself, and because I’m just going across town it will probably be worth it.
With that decided I need to see if I can scrounge up some friend to help me move. Anyone want to help? They’re certainly the cheapest of moving options as I can just buy them some beer
. Unfortunately, most moving companies don’t except perishable goods as proper payment.
I also have to figure out where I’m going to get all my packing supplies from. Hopefully, I can get some spare boxes from a grocery store or something. They generally have a crap ton of them from product deliveries anyway. I’ll update all of you on the progress as I get closer to moving day.
